It’s very common for a passionate business owner to jam pack a daily task sheet or daily calendar. After all, it’s up to you to get things done. True to that mentality, your schedule looks like a great holiday stocking stuffer! It’s so jammed with things to do, your day might as well have 48 hours. There are many ways to address the overwhelming amount of things on your list. In this post, we will discuss prioritizing tasks. Utilize the three tips below to ensure your list is prioritized for success:
1. What is the fastest way to the money? Identify the activities on your list for today that are guaranteed to bring in revenue directly into your business. Meeting with a client, calling a prospect, doing an interview are all activities that can bring you cash. There’s a possibility you may have activities on your list that can save you money, such as finishing the paperwork for a refinance or changing vendors to save 20%. Any activity that equals cash saved or in the bank should be handled first.
2. Identify the things that can only be done by you. If you have to submit the refinance application to save money but your spouse or assistant can do it, it comes off your list and into theirs. Mailing marketing materials to a prospect client can bring you money but should be performed by someone else. A speaking engagement, a call with a client can only be done by you, which makes it into the daily list and moved to the top.
Bonus Tip: If you have to run “errands” during the day that pertain to your business and cannot afford to hire a personal assistant, consider contacting your nearest community college. There are college students eager to help small business owners for a small fee.
3. Perform tasks that take less than an hour. If you are writing an article and historically it takes you more than an hour to write one, you must divide that task into more manageable chucks. Instead of establishing a task that reads write article, create a task that says write article for 45 minutes. Once the 45 minutes are up, move on to another task. This will alleviate feeling inadequate because the items on the list are not being crossed off. Please note, if you are interested in writing a full article that same day, you have to allow enough time to accomplish that. The action translates into not stuffing your holiday stocking to the fullest!
In the next post, I will address how to adequately schedule your day based on the hours you can work. In other words, you run your schedule, your schedule doesn’t run your life!
